MANILA, Philippines -- The Judicial and Bar Council Monday decided to allow live coverage of interviews of nominees for the position of Associate Justice of the Supreme Court.
The position was vacated with the appointment by President Benigno S. Aquino III of then Associate Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno as the Philippines' 24th Chief Justice on Aug. 24, 2012.
President Aquino has until Nov. 22, 2012 to appoint the next SC Associate Justice.
Last week, the JBC announced it will no longer allow live coverage of the interview unlike during the interview of candidates for the Chief Justice post where it was aired live on various television and radio stations.
"In the interest of transparency and openness, we will allow live media coverage subject to the same rules or set up during the public interviews of Chief Justice candidates," Justice Secretary Leila De Lima told reporters Monday.
De Lima is an ex-officio member of the JBC.
De Lima denied reports the JBC has banned live media coverage of interviews in the Judiciary post.
De Lima said no one has signified interest to cover the interview for the post of SC Associate Justice.
"Kaya naman pala naging ganun ang decision is because of the information na parang wala namang interesado na media network. If the major network would express interest in having it covered live, then we will not deny that for as long as there is only one camera inside," De Lima said.
Following the same guidelines as the candidates for Chief Justice post, only a government station will be allowed to bring in cameras inside the venue, the rest will be asked to hook up.
Scheduled for interview on Oct. 23, 2012 are Court of Appeals Associate Justice Ramon M. Bato, Jr., former University of Perpetual Help System College of Law Dean Jose-Santos B. Bisquera, CA Associate Justice Rosemari D. Carandang and Sandiganbayan Associate Justice Maria Cristina J. Cornejo.
The JBC will interview on Oct. 25, 2012 former Regional Trial Court Judge Adoracion P. Cruz-Avisado, CA Associate Justices Magdangal M. De Leon, Isaias P. Dicdican, Jose C. Reyes, Jr. and Noel G. Tijam;
Former University of the Philippines College of Law Dean and current Government of the Republic of the Philippines-Moro Islamic Liberation Front peace panel chair Marvic M. Leonen, former Dept. of Energy Secretary Raphael Perpetuo M. Lotilla and CA Presiding Justice Andres B. Reyes, Jr.
The other three candidates, namely, De La Salle University College of Law Dean Jose Manuel I. Diokno, Securities and Exchange Commission Chairperson Teresita J. Herbosa and former Ateneo De Manila University College of Law Dean Cesar L. Villanueva had been interviewed in July 2012 when they were vying for the post of Chief Justice.
