Hackers target Czech banks, affect online banking

PRAGUE (AP) ? Hackers are targeting major commercial banks in the Czech Republic, bringing down their website and affecting their online banking.

The websites of the country's central bank and the Prague's Stock Exchange were also not accessible Wednesday morning.

Pavla Havova, spokeswoman for the CSOB bank, which belongs to Belgium's KBC, says the bank's website and its Internet banking are affected by Wednesday's attack.

The other major banks, including the Czech branches of Austria's Erste Group and France's Societe Generale say they have also been affected by the denial of service attacks, a technique that works by overloading a website with online traffic.

The banks say their clients' data and deposits are safe.

The attacks came two days after leading media websites in the Czech Republic also faced cyberattacks.

The rise of WebKit browsers, and the fear of IE6-style stagnation

Now that Opera has announced they'll be switching from their Presto HTML rendering engine to WebKit, the open source engine rendering engine Apple forked from KHTML, there's been some concern that having such a dominant technology could one again lead to the type of browser stagnation we suffered under Microsoft and Internet Explorer 6 (IE6). Indeed, Safari on iOS and OS X, Google's Chrome, Palm's webOS, BlackBerry's Torch, and others have all based themselves on WebKit. Writing on Hypercritical, however, John Siracusa thinks the parallel doesn't hold:

I haven?t forgotten the past. A single, crappy web browser coming to dominate the market would be just as terrible today as it was in the dark days of IE6. But WebKit is not a browser. Like Linux, it?s an enabling technology. Like Linux, it?s free, open-source, and therefore beyond the control of any single entity.

I think Siracusa's exactly right. IE was a proprietary app with an ActiveX lock-in. WebKit has become infrastructure surfaced in many apps. Too many, too smart companies all have stake in WebKit and driving it forward. It's open source, but can be strongly opinionated by platform.

It's the best of both browser worlds.

And if you hate it, you still have Microsoft's Trident and Mozilla's Gecko to keep you company, or as long as they can keep up.

Gutted: White House stripped to bare bones in late 1940s

The National Journal's Brian Resnick put together a fascinating look at the White House of the late 1940s with images from the National Archives that emphasize the cavernous quality of the structure while standing in stark contrast to the elegant, stately events that have played out over the years at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

Resnick writes:

The social events of the 1948 holiday season had to be canceled. And with good reason: Experts called the third floor of the White House ?an outstanding example of a firetrap.? The result of a federally commissioned report found the mansion?s plumbing ?makeshift and unsanitary,? while ?the structural deterioration [was] in ?appalling degree,? and threatening complete collapse.? The congressional commission on the matter was considering the option of abandoning the structure altogether in favor of a built-from-scratch mansion, but President Truman lobbied for the restoration.
