Discovery buys Nordic channels, ProSieben owners near exit

(Reuters) - Discovery Communications Inc said it would buy 12 Nordic television channels from Germany's ProSiebenSat.1 Media AG for about $1.7 billion to add fiction and sports to its program offerings.

The acquisition is Discovery's largest ever and gives the company, whose channels include Discovery Channel, TLC and Animal Planet, a firmer foothold in Europe and sweetens the exit for ProSieben's controlling private equity investors.

The sale of the Nordic Channels, one of ProSiebenSat's best performing units, positions private equity investors KKR & Co and Permira -- who together own 88 percent of ProSieben's voting shares -- for a hefty dividend from the German media group.

"It means the private equity owners are able to place up to their full 53 percent stake on the market at some point," said Goldman Sachs analyst Richard Jones.

Discovery also said on Friday it would take 20 percent equity stakes in French television group TF1's Eurosport Group and four pay-TV channels in France and announced a $1 billion increase in stock buybacks.

The purchase extends Discovery into fictional programs and sports broadcasting for the first time.

"This deal also includes our first significant foray into scripted content and the opportunity to manage a suite of nonfiction and fiction brands that bring different formats, personalities and storytelling techniques to our creative culture," Discovery CEO David Zaslav said on a conference call.

Investing in Eurosport was a cheaper option and offered more attractive margins than a foray into the much more expensive U.S. sports market, he said.

The Eurosport deal, worth about $221.6 million, gives Discovery the option to raise its stake to 51 percent in two years.

If Discovery exercises this option, TF1 could exercise a put option over the remaining 49 percent, potentially giving Discovery complete ownership of Eurosport.

The $18.2 million stakes in the French pay channels give Discovery ownership in the TV Breizh, Histoire, Ushuaia TV and Stylia channels.

Citigroup acted as financial adviser to Discovery.

ProSieben's restructuring paves the way for a KKR and Permira disposal after ProSieben converts its non-voting preference shares into voting common shares to attract a broader investor base for the Frankfurt-listed firm.

The German media group plans a dividend payment of about 5.60 euros per share after completion of the sale, which is expected in the first quarter.

In 2012, the company paid a dividend of 1.17 euros per preference share and 1.15 euros per common share.

ProSieben called off an attempt to sell the division last year as offers were too low. Sources have told Reuters that Discovery also was one of the bidders at the time.

In August this year, the German media company said it was looking again at selling after receiving expressions of interest.

ProSiebenSat.1 shares were up 2 percent by 1200 ET, while the broader sector index was down 0.3 percent.

Shares in Discovery were nearly flat at $60.18 in midday trading on the Nasdaq.

ANY DAY NOW (R)

Alan Cumming has long been a celebrated actor, thanks to stellar performances in everything from Cabaret to The Good Wife to his introductions of Masterpiece Theatre. Now, he stars in this story of love, acceptance and family. When a handicapped child (Isaac Leyva) is abandoned by his mother, a gay couple is determined to adopt him so they can give him the family he never had. Authorities decide the men must fight the legal system.

Touching, thoughtful, beautifully acted. Directed by Travis Fine from a true story.

HYDE PARK ON THE HUDSON (R)

It?s a single weekend in June 1939. President and First Lady Roosevelt are hosting the King and Queen of England at the Roosevelt upstate New York estate. This would have been interesting on its own, had Franklin and Eleanor been given depth and reality. Instead, most of the movie is about FDR as a lecherous manipulator and Eleanor is only present for about five minutes. The female we follow in this shallow and insulting movie is FDR?s cousin, played as bland and clueless by Laura Linley. Bill Murray is fine as FDR but the rest of the movie turns what could have been smart and entertaining into a useless soap opera.

Nick Newell wins XFC championship with one hand (VIDEO)

Lost in the hubbub of UFC on Fox 5 was the historic win by Nick Newell. He won XFC's lightweight championship over the weekend despite having just one hand. He was born with an arm that goes just to the elbow because of congenital amputation. As commentator Pat Miletich points out, Newell used his disability to his advantage in locking in a rear-naked choke.

The best part of the video is seeing the young fan who also has a congenital amputation go into cage to congratulate Newell. He is now 9-0, with only one win coming by decision.

Chris Gregoire signed a voter-approved law legalizing gay marriage Wednesday, Dec. 5 and weddings for gay and lesbian couples began in Washington on Sunday, following the three-day waiting period after marriage licenses were issued earlier in the week. (AP Photo/Elaine Thompson)

SEATTLE (AP) ? Same-sex couples in Washington state began reciting wedding vows at events across the state Sunday, on the first day they could marry after the state's gay marriage law took effect.

About 140 couples had registered to marry at Seattle City Hall, which had set up five separate chapels to accommodate the revelers. Starting at 10 a.m., cheers and applause regularly broke out as another couple's marriage became official. Weddings at city hall were to continue through 5 p.m.

Mayor Mike McGinn, who greeted couples at they arrived, called it a "great day, a joyous day."

"It's really wonderful," he said. "A new civil right is going to be recognized in this great civil institution."

Keith Bacon and Corianton Hale of Seattle, who celebrated their six-year anniversary the night before, hugged and kissed to loud cheers and camera flashes as they took their vows before one of the 16 local judges who volunteered to officiate the weddings on Sunday.

"We're totally thrilled," Bacon said. The couple had done a commitment ceremony in August but said this day was particularly special.

"We had looked at this as maybe a day we would sign a piece of paper and seal the deal, and instead we're having this huge party being thrown in our honor," Bacon said. "It's just mind blowing."

Nancy Monahan, 57, a retired petty office with the Coast Guard, waited outside before the weddings began with her partner of 14 years, Deb Needham, 48.

Monahan was wearing her uniform, and Needham was wearing an ivory dress and jacket and matching hat. They said they wanted to join the large wedding event at city hall because of the significance of the day.

"It's not very private, but very historic," Needham said, to which Monahan added, "And very awesome."

Some courthouses, including in King and Thurston Counties, opened right at midnight, and started marrying couples. Private weddings are expected to take place across the state, as well as some other public events, including the marriage of two couples after the end of the first act of a Seattle Men's Chorus performance at Benaroya Hall in Seattle. The Paramount Theater in Seattle was also to host a large wedding reception for couples.

Hundreds of gay and lesbian couples picked up their marriage licenses as early as 12:01 a.m. Thursday, but because of the state's three-day waiting period, the earliest weddings could take place was just after midnight, early Sunday morning. In King County, home to Seattle, more than 600 same-sex marriage licenses were issued by Saturday.

Robin Wyss, of Seattle, said that the wedding ceremony to her partner, Danielle Yung, was "more emotional than I thought it would be," in part because Yung is five months pregnant.

"Our friends are here, it's a beautiful space and there's all of his love and appreciation," she said. "We've been thinking about this as more of a political celebration for all of Washington state, but obviously it's very meaningful for us and our future child as well."

At the Thurston County Courthouse just after midnight, five couples were married, including Jonathon Bashford, 31, and Matthew Wiltse, 29, both of Olympia.

The couple, together for 10 years, just had a large commitment ceremony in September when they registered as domestic partners, but said they wanted to be among the first to legally marry.

"We weren't going to wait one second longer," Wiltse said.

Last month, Washington, Maine and Maryland became the first states to pass same-sex marriage by popular vote. They joined six other states ? New York, Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont ? and the District of Columbia that had already enacted laws or issued court rulings permitting same-sex marriage.

Couples in Maryland also started picking up marriage licenses Thursday, though their licenses won't take effect until Jan. 1. Maine's law takes effect on Dec. 29. There's no waiting period in Maine, and people can start marrying just after midnight.

Washington Gov. Chris Gregoire and Secretary of State Sam Reed certified the election results of Referendum 74 on Wednesday afternoon, and the law took effect at 12:01 a.m. Thursday. Same-sex couples who previously were married in another state that allows gay marriage, like Massachusetts, will not have to get remarried in Washington state. Their marriages became valid here as soon as the law took effect.

The referendum had asked voters to either approve or reject the state law legalizing same-sex marriage that legislators passed earlier this year. That law was signed by Gregoire in February but was put on hold pending the outcome of the election. Nearly 54 percent of voters approved the measure.

The law doesn't require religious organizations or churches to perform marriages, and it doesn't subject churches to penalties if they don't marry gay or lesbian couples.

Married same-sex couples will still be denied access to federal pensions, health insurance and other government benefits available to heterosexual couples because the 1996 federal Defense of Marriage Act, known as DOMA, bars federal recognition of gay unions.

The U.S. Supreme Court on Friday said it will take up gay marriage sometime during the current term. Several pending cases challenge the federal benefit provision of DOMA, and a separate appeal asks the justices to decide whether federal courts were correct in striking down California's Proposition 8, the amendment that outlawed gay marriage after it had been approved by courts in the nation's largest state.

Twitter adds filters for photos as Instagram rift widens

15 hrs.

Twitter released an update for its iPhone and Android apps Monday, adding the ability to edit and apply filters to photos ? and further distancing itself from now-rival photo sharing service Instagram.

The new version of the app includes rudimentary photo controls, allowing users to enhance, crop and add one of eight filters to their pictures.

Instagram users who are?accustomed to far more options and manual control over the intensity of the filter will not be impressed. But people who prefer to share photos from within Twitter will appreciate the ability to make adjustments without leaving the app.

Coincidentally (or perhaps not),?Instagram also released an update to their app Monday, adding a number of new features.

Twitter and Instagram, once tightly integrated, have been drifting apart following Facebook's acquisition of the photo app. The most recent change was the total removal last week of Instagram images from the Twitter stream.

Things to Consider When You Are Going Sailing

One of the best ways to enjoy the holiday season is to go sailing. You can either hire a houseboat or a yacht. The boat will somewhat be like your RV, the only difference is you're going to be traveling on water rather than on land. If you're planning to set sail anytime soon, here are some things to consider before contacting a boat rental company.

1. How much will it cost?

Like most getaways, the cost of a houseboat or yacht charters depend on the number of people going and the size of the boat. If you are a little out of budget, invite a number of friends to come along with you. This way you can split the rental fee to make it more affordable to you.

2. Why should I go?

Houseboating and chartering yachts are now becoming a popular form of recreation among different people of all ages who are looking for fun, excitement or relaxation. So, if you need to have a break from all the stress at work and at home or if you can't resist the idea of a water adventure, sailing is a breath of fresh air for you.

3. What should I bring?

Generally, rental companies provide all the furnishings and tools needed to give you the best experience ever. Ask for an inventory list of all the tools and equipment in the boat that you're renting. This will let you know the things that are not provided for by the company such as kitchen utensils, sheets, bedding, blankets, bath towels etc. Then make your own list of all the things that you will need to bring.

4. Why is sailing better than my other vacation options?

Sailing is like a camping trip with a twist. If you are looking for relaxation, what else could be more relaxing than tranquil waters? If you are an adventurous type of person, island hopping, snorkeling and parasailing are just among the many things that you could try while you're on vacation.

5. I don't know how to sail. What should I do?

You can either hire a skipper or learn the ropes to be your boat's own captain. The rental company will give you an orientation about navigation and safety instructions before you set sail. You will learn everything from starting and steering to anchoring and navigating the boat, plus, other special instructions like how to use the radio, toilets, hot tub, water slide and barbecue grill. The key is to listen really carefully, take down notes and everything will turn out perfectly.

If you want to have the ultimate holiday experience, visit the CCY website at www.ccy.com.au and find out how you can charter a yacht. You can also click on this link http://www.ccy.com.au/airlie/ to know more.

Twins have simultaneous and free hip replacements

(AP) ? To make the high school cheerleading team 40 years ago, twins Deborah and Sandra Fanelli performed an acrobatic move called "the flying splits."

The memory recently drew a rueful laugh from the once-active sisters, who in recent years have had trouble simply walking.

Severe arthritis has nearly crippled Sandra, known as Sam, who uses a walker. Deb has relied on a cane.

But on Friday, the 56-year-old twins, who have lived their entire lives together, were wheeled into side-by-side operating rooms at Rothman Orthopaedic Specialty Hospital in the Philadelphia suburb of Bensalem.

Deb received a right hip replacement and Sam had surgery on both hips as part of Operation Walk USA, a program that offers free knee and hip replacements to uninsured patients like the Fanellis.

"I'm just incredibly grateful and in awe of this procedure," Sam said, just hours after surgery as she took her first steps down a hospital corridor to visit her sister.

Doctors, hospitals and implant manufacturers donate time and equipment for the procedures. A hip replacement would normally cost about $16,000, plus hospitalization, according to Rothman officials.

The program started in the mid-1990s to serve patients in developing countries but has been offered in the U.S. for only the past two years. The Fanelli twins were among five patients at Rothman, and among 200 people nationwide, receiving free new joints on Friday.

The sisters had become increasingly debilitated with arthritis after dancing and singing professionally for 20 years, including eight years at a casino in Atlantic City, N.J.

They have been living in their childhood home in Clementon, N.J., with their spry and doting 81-year-old mother, Blanche, who has watched with alarm as her daughters' conditions have deteriorated.

"Because I'm not a young person," Blanche said in an interview Thursday. "And I thought, 'Oh, my gosh, who's going to take care of them?'"

Over the past few years, Sam has run a small gourmet cookie business out of the house and Deb has sold cosmetics. But their outings have been minimal, limited mainly to the grocery store and their parish church.

"It's hard to even get up some days," Deb said. "The hip pain and the limitations have robbed us of our freedom and robbed us of our, just, mental joy, to get up and live."

Sam's problems started about 10 years ago. One hip became so painful that their father paid for an experimental replacement procedure in 2003, but Sam saw little improvement. Deb's leg gave out a couple of years later and has gotten progressively worse. The twins have never had health insurance.

Then earlier this year, a friend told them about Operation Walk USA. The family was overcome with joy when they found out both sisters qualified for free surgery.

Dr. Bill Hozack, who gave Sam a new left hip and fixed the old replacement on her right hip, said the operations went well.

"Assuming everything heals properly, no complications ? which is usually the case ? they should be able to go out and do everything they want to do and not have any problems with the hips," Hozack said.

For now, the sisters must recover and begin re-learning to walk on their new joints. After a tearful reunion in Deb's hospital room Friday afternoon, they said they looked forward to this new phase in their lives.

"I'm flabbergasted. I'm overwhelmed," Deb said. "The worst is behind us. We're going to be great."

A day earlier, the twins had said one of their first goals is to participate this spring in a fundraising walk for ovarian cancer, in memory of a dear friend.

"The first year we went to participate, we had to sit on the sidelines and just kind of watch everybody," Deb said. "So this year, we want to get out there and walk."

"Definitely," added Sam. "I can't wait."

Assault feared as troops boosted in Syria capital

Syrian activists fear a new ground assault Friday on Damascus suburbs where military reinforcements poured in as fighting and bombing raged on the outskirts and south of the capital, a watchdog said.

"The army bombed orchards surrounding Daraya where military reinforcements are heading," said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, citing activists on the ground.

"Moadamiyet al-Sham was also violently pounded and large reinforcements were deployed apparently to attack the town," said the watchdog which gathers information from a network of activists and medics across the country.

For several days the air and artillery bombardments have focused on these areas raising fears of an imminent ground assault.

In Damascus itself, the southern districts were bombarded by regime troops, the Observatory said, after shelling and fighting between rebels and soldiers throughout the night in several suburbs.

The city's outskirts are at the heart of the fighting where the regime has launched an operation to reclaim territory within eight kilometers of the capital which analysts say it wants to retain in a bid to negotiate a solution to the conflict.

In the north, rebels besieged Menegh military airport which they struck with mortars as electricity was cut off in most parts in Aleppo province, the Observatory said.

Gunfire and explosions were also heard in the province of Daraa in the south, and Banias along the Mediterranean coast, it added.

The Observatory said 77 people were killed on Thursday across the country, half of them in Damascus and its suburbs.

The violence in Syria has so far left more than 42,000 people dead, mostly civilians, since the beginning of the protests against the regime of President Bashar al-Assad nearly 21 months ago.

Vieira Calls Chinese Tech Stocks Crash. According to Vieira, world best stock trader, the best selling short opportunities existed on the Chinese tech sector published to this blog a long time ago.

Vieira offered to investors hundreds of millions in profits selling short Chinese tech stocks such as Sina Corporation (SINA), Baidu (BIDU), Sohu (SOHU), Dangdang (DANG) and Youku (YOKU). On the contrary, Wall Street analysts?maintained Strong Buy ratings on many of these top short opportunities as Sina, Baidu and Youku, confirming their ignorance about the Chinese market.

For instance, Goldman Sachs (GS) had a Buy rating on Youku (YOKU) at $52. Today the stock is priced at $13.93. Vieira was damn right about Goldman Sachs and other stock market analysts caught in scandals selling scams to their clients.

Nomura website claims to be?a leading financial services group and a preeminent Asian-based investment bank. Do they really believe investors are so stupid? This bank had a Strong Buy rating on Sina Corporation during a crash! It?s not a surprise Vieira?s services growth in Japan are up 500% ?in 2012.

Jazz pioneer, pianist Dave Brubeck dies at age 91

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) ? Jazz composer and pianist Dave Brubeck, whose pioneering style in pieces such as "Take Five" caught listeners' ears with exotic, challenging rhythms, has died. He was 91.

Brubeck died Wednesday morning at Norwalk Hospital of heart failure after being stricken while on his way to a cardiology appointment with his son Darius, said his manager Russell Gloyd. Brubeck would have turned 92 on Thursday.

Brubeck had a career that spanned almost all American jazz since World War II. He formed The Dave Brubeck Quartet in 1951 and was the first modern jazz musician to be pictured on the cover of Time magazine ? on Nov. 8, 1954 ? and he helped define the swinging, smoky rhythms of 1950s and '60s club jazz.

The seminal album "Time Out," released by the quartet in 1959, was the first ever million-selling jazz LP, and is still among the best-selling jazz albums of all time. It opens with "Blue Rondo a la Turk" in 9/8 time ? nine beats to the measure instead of the customary two, three or four beats.

A piano-and-saxophone whirlwind based loosely on a Mozart piece, "Blue Rondo" eventually intercuts between Brubeck's piano and a more traditional 4/4 jazz rhythm.

The album also features "Take Five" ? in 5/4 time ? which became the Quartet's signature theme and even made the Billboard singles chart in 1961. It was composed by Brubeck's longtime saxophonist, Paul Desmond.

"When you start out with goals ? mine were to play polytonally and polyrhythmically ? you never exhaust that," Brubeck told The Associated Press in 1995. "I started doing that in the 1940s. It's still a challenge to discover what can be done with just those two elements."

After service in World War II and study at Mills College in Oakland, Calif., Brubeck formed an octet including Desmond on alto sax and Dave van Kreidt on tenor, Cal Tjader on drums and Bill Smith on clarinet. The group played Brubeck originals and standards by other composers, including some early experimentation in unusual time signatures. Their groundbreaking album "Dave Brubeck Octet" was recorded in 1946.

The group evolved into the Quartet, which played colleges and universities. The Quartet's first album, "Jazz at Oberlin," was recorded live at Oberlin College in Ohio in 1953.

Ten years later, Joe Morello on drums and Eugene Wright on bass joined with Brubeck and Desmond to produce "Time Out."

In later years Brubeck composed music for operas, ballet, even a contemporary Mass.

In 1988, he played for Mikhail Gorbachev, at a dinner in Moscow that then-President Ronald Reagan hosted for the Soviet leader.

"I can't understand Russian, but I can understand body language," said Brubeck, after seeing the general secretary tapping his foot.

In the late 1980s, Brubeck contributed music for one episode of an eight-part series of television specials, "This Is America, Charlie Brown."

His music was for an episode involving NASA and the space station. He worked with three of his sons ? Chris on bass trombone and electric bass, Dan on drums and Matthew on cello ? and included excerpts from his Mass "To Hope! A Celebration," his oratorio "A Light in the Wilderness," and a piece he had composed but never recorded, "Quiet As the Moon."

"That's the beauty of music," he told the AP in 1992. "You can take a theme from a Bach sacred chorale and improvise. It doesn't make any difference where the theme comes from; the treatment of it can be jazz."

In 2006, the University of Notre Dame gave Brubeck its Laetare Medal, awarded each year to a Roman Catholic "whose genius has ennobled the arts and sciences, illustrated the ideals of the church and enriched the heritage of humanity."

At the age of 88, in 2009, Brubeck was still touring, in spite of a viral infection that threatened his heart and made him miss an April show at his alma mater, the University of the Pacific.

By June, though, he was playing in Chicago, where the Tribune critic wrote that "Brubeck was coaxing from the piano a high lyricism more typically encountered in the music of Chopin."

In 1996, he won a lifetime achievement award from the Grammys and in 2009 he was a Kennedy Center Honors recipient.

Brubeck told the AP the Kennedy Center award would have delighted his late mother, Elizabeth Ivey Brubeck, a classical pianist who was initially disappointed by her youngest son's interest in jazz. (He added that she had lived long enough to come to appreciate his music.)

Numerous jazz musicians were already on their way to Connecticut this week for a birthday concert in his Brubeck's honor that had been scheduled for Thursday in Waterbury. The show will go on as a tribute concert. Darius, an acclaimed pianist, was among those scheduled to perform along with saxophonist Richie Cannata, and Bernie Williams, former New York Yankees star and a jazz guitarist.

Born in Concord, Calif., on Dec. 6, 1920, Brubeck actually had planned to become a rancher like his father. He attended the College of the Pacific (now the University of the Pacific) in 1938, intending to major in veterinary medicine and return to the family's 45,000-acre spread.

But within a year Brubeck was drawn to music. He graduated in 1942 and was drafted by the Army, where he served ? mostly as a musician ? under Gen. George S. Patton in Europe. At the time, his Wolfpack Band was the only racially integrated unit in the military.

In an interview for Ken Burns' PBS miniseries "Jazz," Brubeck talked about playing for troops with his integrated band, only to return to the U.S. to see his black bandmates refused service in a restaurant in Texas.

Brubeck and his wife, Iola, had five sons and a daughter. Four of his sons ? Chris on trombone and electric bass, Dan on drums, Darius on keyboards and Matthew on cello ? played with the London Symphony Orchestra in a birthday tribute to Brubeck in December 2000.

"We never had a rift," Chris Brubeck once said of living and playing with his father. "I think music has always been a good communication tool, so we didn't have a rift. We've always had music in common."

Brig counsellor: Manning's history, behaviour outweighed doctor's opinion of self-harm risk

FORT MEADE, Md. - An Army private charged with sending U.S secrets to the website WikiLeaks had a history of suicidal thoughts and aloof behaviour that outweighed a psychiatrist's opinion that he was no risk to himself, two former counsellors testified Sunday.

Army Staff Sgt. Ryan Jordan and Marine Master Sgt. Craig Blenis testified on the sixth day of a pretrial hearing for Pfc. Bradley Manning at Fort Meade, near Baltimore. The hearing is to determine whether Manning's nine months in pretrial confinement at the Marine Corps brig in Quantico, Virginia, were so punishing that the judge should dismiss all charges. The 24-year-old intelligence analyst is accused of sending hundreds of thousands of classified documents to the secret-spilling website in 2009 and 2010 when he was stationed in Baghdad.

The counsellors, both of whom worked in the brig, sat on a board that recommended to the brig commander that Manning remain in maximum custody and on either injury-prevention or suicide-risk status ? conditions that kept him confined to his cell 23 hours a day, sometimes with no clothing.

Jordan said under cross-examination by defence attorney David Coombs that besides the mental-health report, he considered evidence that Manning had contemplated suicide six to eight months earlier after his arrest in Iraq. The evidence included a noose Manning had fashioned from a bedsheet while confined in Kuwait, and a written statement he made upon arrival at Quantico in July 2010 that he was "always planning and never acting" on suicidal impulses.

Jordan acknowledged Manning had been a polite, courteous and nearly trouble-free detainee at Quantico.

"Wouldn't his past six months of performance be an indicator of his potential for future behaviour?" Coombs asked. But Jordan maintained that Manning's unwillingness to converse with him and other brig staff was a warning sign he was at risk of self-harm.

Jordan said he considered the opinion of the brig psychiatrist, Navy Capt. William Hocter, that Manning was no longer at risk of self-harm. But Jordan said the weight he gave to Hocter's views was diminished because another detainee had recently killed himself after his custody status was reduced on Hocter's advice.

"I would consider it, but I would always consider it with care, sir," he told Coombs.

Blenis, who spent more time with Manning, said Manning chose not to speak most of the time except for short, yes-or-no answers. He said Manning spurned his offers to play chess or work brain teasers by arrogantly responding, "They're a little below my level."

"I've got a person not communicating with me that's sitting in his cell, not doing anything," Blenis said.

He said he supported the brig commander's decision in March 2011 to strip Manning of all clothing at night and place him on suicide watch after Manning told another staffer that if he really wanted to kill himself, he could use the elastic waistband on his underwear.

"If someone tells me they're going to shoot themselves in the face, I'm not going to give them a gun," Blenis said.

Manning was moved in April 2011 to pretrial confinement at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. He's been held there in medium custody since then.

Earlier Sunday, the military judge said Manning's trial, previously set to begin Feb. 4, would be pushed back to sometime in March due to lengthy pretrial proceedings.

The hearing on Manning's confinement was to recess Sunday and resume Wednesday.

Manning is charged with 22 offences, including aiding the enemy and violating federal espionage and computer security laws. He could get life in prison.

He is accused of sending to WikiLeaks more than 250,000 diplomatic cables, classified memos, Iraq and Afghanistan war logs, Guantanamo Bay prison records and a 2007 video clip of a U.S. helicopter crew gunning down 11 men in Iraq. It was later determined that one of those men was a news photographer. The Pentagon said its troops mistook camera equipment for weapons.

The case has spawned an international support network of people who believe the U.S. government has gone too far in seeking to punish Manning, who was a low-level intelligence analyst in Baghdad.

Scientists find 'bully' genes in common childhood tumor

ScienceDaily (Dec. 2, 2012) ? In a genome sequencing study of 74 neuroblastoma tumors in children, scientists at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center and the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) found that patients with changes in two genes, ARID1A and ARID1B, survive only a quarter as long as patients without the changes. The discovery could eventually lead to early identification of patients with aggressive neuroblastomas who may need additional treatments.

Neuroblastomas affect nerve tissue throughout the body and are the most common, non-blood cancer in children. "These cancers have a wide spectrum of clinical outcomes, with some that are highly curable and others very lethal," says Victor Velculescu, M.D., Ph.D., professor of oncology and co-director of the Cancer Biology Program at Johns Hopkins. "Part of the reason for this variety in prognosis may be due to changes in the ARID1A and ARID1B genes."

Velculescu said these powerful "bully" genes were not identified in other gene sequencing studies of neuroblastoma, most likely because the Johns Hopkins-CHOP researchers used sequencing and analytical methods that looked for larger, structural rearrangements of DNA in addition to changes in the sequence of individual chemical base-pairs that form DNA. A report of their work appears in the Dec. 2 issue of Nature Genetics.

Of the 74 tumors in the study, 71 were analyzed for both rearrangements and base-pair changes. Cancer-specific mutations were found in a variety of genes previously linked to neuroblastoma, including the ALK and MYCN genes. In eight of the 71 patients, the investigators found alterations in the ARID1A and ARID1B genes, which normally control the way DNA folds to allow or block protein production.

The children with ARID1A or ARID1B gene changes had far worse survival, on average, than those without the genetic alterations -- 386 days compared with 1,689 days. All but one of these patients died of progressive disease, including one child whose neuroblastoma was thought to be highly curable.

The scientists were also able to detect and monitor neuroblastoma-specific genetic changes in the blood of four patients included in the study, and correlated these findings to disease progression.

"Finding cancer-specific alterations in the blood could help clinicians monitor patients for relapse and determine whether residual cancer cells remain in the body after surgery," says Mark Sausen, a Johns Hopkins graduate student and one of the lead scientists involved in the research.

The Johns Hopkins-CHOP team plans to conduct further studies in larger groups of patients to confirm the ARID1A-ARID1B correlation to prognosis.

Funding for the study was provided by the St. Baldrick's Foundation, the Virginia and D.K. Ludwig Fund for Cancer Research, Swim Across America, the American Association for Cancer Research -- Stand Up To Cancer's Dream Team Translational Cancer Research Grant, and the National Institutes of Health's National Cancer Institute (CA121113).

PFT: Polamalu to have 'significant role' this week

Pittsburgh Steelers' Brett Keisel (99) sacks Cleveland Browns quarterback Brandon Weeden (3) during the fourth quarter of their NFL football game in ClevelandReuters

It?s Christmas tree night at the Florio household.? Which means that I?ll be risking injury as I take an axe out to the back 40 and make like Jack Del Rio on the choicest trunk of pine.

Actually, the tree is in a box.? But I could still get injured; those fake needles are quite pointy.

Speaking of injuries, here?s our weekly look at the guys who are banged up for Sunday?s games.? Which I most likely won?t get injured while typing.

Cardinals at Jets

Three Arizona wideouts are questionable, but none are named Larry or Fitzgerald.? Andre Roberts looks to be the least likely to play with an ankle injury; he didn?t practice all week.? Running back Beanie Wells, back from IR, is now questionable with a knee injury.? Jets receiver Clyde Gates is doubtful with a concussion.? Tim Tebow reportedly will be inactive due to broken ribs that have him listed as questionable.

Panthers at Chiefs

Carolina running back Jonathan Stewart is doubtful with an ankle injury.? Quarterback Cam Newton has a right wrist injury, but he is listed as probable and missed no practice time.? Chiefs tackle Branden Albert is questionable with a back injury, as is linebacker Tamba Hali, who has an injured knee.

Bengals at Chargers

Receiver Mohamed Sanu is out with a foot injury that may require season-ending surgery.? Running back BenJarvus Green-Ellis is probable with an ankle injury.? Chargers wideout Eddie Royal is out with a hamstring.? Safety Eric Weddle is probable due a concussion suffered on that 4th-and-29 block from Anquan Boldin.

Browns at Raiders

Cleveland quarterback Brandon Weeden has been cleared to play after suffering a concussion on Sunday.? Running back Trent Richardson is probable with chest, rib, and finger injuries.? Raiders running backs Darren McFadden and Mike Goodson are questionable with ankle injuries.? Two of Oakland?s running backs, Taiwan Jones (ankle) and Marcel Reece (hamstring, quadricep), are probable.

Texans at Titans

A whopping 21 Texans are probable.? Out are cornerback Johnathan Joseph (hamstring, groin) and linebacker Brooks Reed (groin).? Titans linebacker Colin McCarthy (concussion) is out with a concussion.? Receiver Kenny Britt is probable with a knee injury.

Colts at Lions

The Colts have no major injuries.? Lions receiver Calvin Johnson (thumb) and running back Mikel Leshoure (ankle) are probable.? Safety Louis Delmas (knee) is questionable.

Jaguars at Bills

Receivers Justin Blackmon (groin) and Cecil Shorts (hamstring) are probable after unexpectedly missing practice on Thursday.? Twenty-two Bills show up on the injury report, with defensive ends Mark Anderson (knee) and Chris Kelsay (neck) out.

Vikings at Packers

Minnesota receiver Percy Harvin is doubtful once again with an ankle injury.? Nine others are probable.? Six Packers are out, including linebacker Clay Matthews (hamstring).? Receiver Greg Jennings is slated to play for the first time since September, listed as probable after recovering from hernia surgery.

Patriots at Dolphins

Defensive end Chandler Jones (ankle), guard Logan Mankins (ankle, calf), and tight end Rob Gronkowski (forearm, hip) are out for New England.? A total of 15 Patriots are questionable, including four receivers and tight end Aaron Hernandez (ankle).? The Dolphins have no major injuries.

Steelers at Ravens

Receiver Antonio Brown (ankle) and safety Troy Polamalu (calf) are probable after extended absences.? Receiver Jerricho Cotchery (ribs) is questionable to return to action after missing last week?s loss to Cleveland.? Four Steelers are out:? quarterback Ben Roethlisberger (shoulder), Byron Leftwich (ribs), linebacker LaMarr Woodley (ankle), and Mike Adams (ankle).? Several key Ravens are probable.? Tight end Ed Dickson (knee) is doubtful.

49ers at Rams

For San Fran, 11 players are probable.? Safety Darcel McBath is questionable with a concussion, and tight end Demarcus Dobbs has been ruled out after an arrest.? Rams receiver Danny Amendola, who played despite being doubtful last week, is doubtful again with a foot injury.? Without him, the chances of a Rams loss become probable.

Seahawks at Bears

Seattle receiver Sidney Rice is questionable with a calf injury.? Running back Marshawn Lynch is probable with a back injury.? For the Bears, receiver Devin Hester (concussion) and guard Chris Spencer (knee) are out.? Receiver Alshon Jeffery (knee) is doubtful.

Buccaneers at Broncos

The Bucs have only four guys on the list, and all are probable.? Broncos receiver Brandon Stokley is questionable with wrist and hip injuries.

Eagles at Cowboys

Running back LeSean McCoy and quarterback Mike Vick are both out with concussions.? Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray (foot) is questionable, but he?s expected to play.? Also questionable are receiver Miles Austin (hip) and running back Felix Jones (knee).? Receiver Kevin Ogletree is probable with a concussion that kept him from playing in the Thanksgiving loss to the Redskins.? Defensive tackle Jay Ratliff is doubtful with a groin injury.

Tampa dermatologist offers effective skin cancer ... - PR NewsChannel

(PR NewsChannel) / November 30, 2012 / TAMPA, Fla.?

Tampa dermatologist Forman dermatology and skin cancer instituteOne Tampa dermatologist is offering a new treatment for the most common form of skin cancer, basal cell carcinoma, which can affect the patient?s cosmetic appearance. Until now, most treatment options for those with basal cell carcinoma have been invasive procedures that can leave them with visible scars.

Dr. Seth Forman is using a new technology, the SRT-100, to treat basal cell carcinoma. Through nonsurgical radiotherapy, the procedure virtually eliminates any scarring and consequently, the need for skin reconstruction. According to Forman, most skin cancers that the SRT-100 treats appear on commonly exposed areas that patients do not want scarred, like the face, hands and neck.

?With this nonsurgical radiotherapy treatment, I am able to effectively treat a patient?s skin cancer, and their skin is left smooth and free of surgical scars,? says the Tampa dermatologist.

The Tampa dermatologist and his successful use of the SRT-100 technology have appeared on local Tampa news broadcasts as well as the CBS hit TV show, ?The Doctors.? Renowned surgeon and the show?s co-host, Dr. Drew Ordon, referred to the SRT-100 technology as ?a real game changer.?

Forman is currently one of the only board-certified dermatologists in the United States to use the SRT-100 technology to treat skin cancer. First sold in July of 2011 to a hospital in Hong Kong, the noninvasive skin cancer treatment just recently made it way overseas.

A Letter from Dracut School Committeeman Matt Sheehan ...

I support Greater Lowell Tech.

Twelve years ago I had the privilege of attending the Greater Lowell Technical High School. During my four years there, I studied culinary arts under the direction of great teachers including Paul Morin, Arnold Price, Sandra Day, and the late Peter Coffin. The education that I received at Greater Lowell prepared me well for the transition to college where I earned my Associates Degree in Science.

The need for well-trained service and technical professionals is ever expanding. From traditional vocational service fields such as culinary arts, plumbing, and carpentry, to technical arts trades such as machine engineering, electronics, and office technology, to human service fields such as early childhood education, medical assisting, and hotel management Greater Lowell Technical High School provides education and training for these fields that are always desirable.

Over the years, Dracut has benefited from the training that Greater Lowell provides our children. For example:

? Electrical- Rewiring and installation of air conditioning units at the senior center

? Auto Tech-Painting of several police cruisers as well as a fire truck

? Carpentry- Students built a screen house and two storage sheds for the Dracut Housing Authority

? Painting- Painted town Hall

?Greater Lowell has given back $385,707.00 over the past ten years towards Transportation costs.

Greater Lowell?s facility is in need of improvements to support the efficient operation of the physical plant and to maintain the educational programming provided by the school. I am writing this letter to support the renovation project at Greater Lowell Tech. I write this letter of support as a proud alumnus, a Dracut Taxpayer, and an honored elected official.

The Dracut Public Schools has an outstanding and wide-ranging educational program.. There are, however, certain programming it cannot offer such as those listed above and others. The regionalization of vocational programming is an efficient way of supporting students who wish to pursue areas of study outside of the existing offerings of our community high schools. This is just one of many reasons that I support the renovation project for Greater Lowell Tech. When it comes to the education of our young adults of Dracut, we need to work together to provide the best learning environment we can.

The total price for this project is $65,310,211.00. The MSBA reimbursement rate is 76.84% or $50,088,316.00, leaving a balance of $15,030,825.00 of which Dracut?s cost is $3,124,909.00. Projects like these are proof of what our tax dollars can do in the state. The community?s financial obligation to its students who attend Greater Lowell is most efficiently met through support for the renovation project.

I ask that on December 11, 2012 the voter?s of Dracut carefully consider the numerous advantages to our students and support the renovation project for Greater Lowell Tech.

Thank You,

Matthew J Sheehan

Apple to start selling new iMacs on Friday

(AP) ? Apple says the smaller version its new, slimmed-down iMac desktop computers will go on sale Friday. It will also start taking orders for the larger model, but the units won't ship until next month.

The model with the 21.5-inch screen will cost $1,299 and up, depending on the configuration. The model with a 27-inch screen will start at $1,799.

The iMac tacks the computer components to the back of a large LCD screen. The new models have no disk drive, helping make the edges one-fifth the thickness of the old model. They bulge considerably toward the middle of the back, however.

Apple revealed the new models a month ago.
