CA ? auto insurance coverage of new car with existing policy?
We purchased a used car Wednesday night. The salesman asked about what we're gonna do with the insurance. We informed him that our other car that we drove to the dealership is insured and we'll call the insurance to add the car we're purchasing once the paper works were started. He said it's not necessary; under CA law my existing insurance automatically covers the car we're purchasing for 30 days.

We took home the car without calling the insurance. Being it was Thanksgiving yesterday we didn't call our insurance company. We just called today and found out that they are closed for the weekend. I'd rather not drive the car to work Monday if it does not have insurance. Is it true that the car we just purchased is covered by my existing insurance?

You purchase, new or used is covered for the 30 day period. Just call your agent anytime during the 30 days.

It's true, BUT the new one is covered for only what you had on the other car?if you had only liability on it, you have only liability on the new one for that 30 days. If you need comp/collision to satisfy a lender, you need to specify that when you call. And don't put off calling; it's awfully easy to forget!
